Sora Shutdown Serves as 'Reality Check' for AI Video Industry — ByteDance Seedance 2.0 Also Delayed
Following OpenAI Sora app shutdown, ByteDance also delays Seedance 2.0 global launch. TechCrunch analyzes this as a reality check for the entire AI video industry, accelerating the shift from hype to realistic business models.
Following OpenAI's announcement that it would shut down the Sora app and related video models just six months after launch, ByteDance has also delayed the global launch of its Seedance 2.0 video model, citing engineering and legal issues. TechCrunch analyzes this series of developments as a 'reality check' moment for the entire AI video industry.
OpenAI's Sora shutdown is seen as part of the company's strategic pivot toward enterprise and productivity tools ahead of a potential IPO. The $1 billion partnership between OpenAI and Disney was also terminated following Sora's discontinuation, making clear the company's priority shift from consumer products to business, enterprise, and programming solutions.
TechCrunch's Kirsten Korosec commented: 'I actually want to give OpenAI props for this decision. There is value in companies that can iterate very quickly and then kill off products that are not working without feeling a sense of failure. Their decision to shutter it showed a sign of maturity that was nice to see in an AI lab.'
Anthony Ha added: 'It's this reality check moment. There were really hyperbolic statements, including from people within Hollywood, like "we're done, this is the future, it's just typing in prompts and making feature films." And it turns out that for all kinds of technical and legal reasons, it is not that easy and we are very, very far from that happening.'
The Sora shutdown and Seedance 2.0 delay highlight the significant technical and legal challenges facing AI video generation technology, marking a turning point from hype toward more realistic and sustainable business models.
