Samsung SDI made a significant announcement on March 9, heralding a new era for AI and robotics by unveiling its first-ever pouch-type all-solid-state battery (ASSB) sample. The groundbreaking technology was showcased at InterBattery 2026, a major battery exhibition held in Seoul, signaling the company's strategic pivot towards the burgeoning physical AI market, which includes humanoid robots and next-generation wearables.

The newly developed battery is specifically engineered to meet the demanding requirements of physical AI applications. These robots require compact, high-energy-density power sources for extended operation and lightweight design. Furthermore, they exhibit instantaneous power spikes during movement, necessitating batteries with high power-output capabilities. Samsung SDI's ASSB addresses these needs by utilizing a pouch form factor for flexibility and weight reduction, while its solid electrolyte technology ensures enhanced safety and performance. The company has set an ambitious target for mass production, aiming to begin in the second half of 2027.

This move represents a significant diversification of Samsung SDI's product portfolio. While the company has been a leader in prismatic batteries for electric vehicles, the development of pouch-type ASSBs opens up new avenues in robotics, aviation, and advanced wearable devices. The company's presentation, themed "AI thinks, Battery enables," underscored the critical role of advanced battery solutions in realizing the full potential of the AI era. Alongside the ASSB, Samsung SDI also introduced innovative battery solutions for the infrastructure powering AI, including high-power batteries for Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) and Battery Backup Units (BBU) in data centers.

The industry impact of this development is expected to be substantial. The commercialization of all-solid-state batteries has long been considered a holy grail for the battery industry, promising greater safety, higher energy density, and longer life cycles compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. By targeting the physical AI sector, Samsung SDI is positioning itself at the forefront of a technological wave that will redefine automation and human-robot interaction.
