OpenAI announced the shutdown of its Sora video AI app on March 24, 2026, as reported by TechCrunch and Variety. Launched as a TikTok-style social app in September 2025, Sora's run came to an end after just 15 months.

Sora's signature feature was 'cameos' (later renamed 'characters'), which allowed users to scan their faces and create realistic deepfake videos. However, unauthorized use of celebrities' likenesses and generation of inappropriate content became serious issues. While the app reached approximately 3.32 million monthly downloads in November 2025, popularity rapidly declined to about 1.12 million downloads by February 2026.

The shutdown also dissolved Disney's $1 billion partnership, which had been spearheaded by Disney CEO Bob Iger. The deal was intended to make characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars available on the Sora platform. However, while the contract was signed, no actual funds had been transferred, as risks to brand image and creator rights protection remained significant barriers.

Although OpenAI has not disclosed the official reason for the shutdown, the decision is believed to reflect a strategic pivot toward concentrating resources on more profitable AGI development ahead of a rumored IPO in late 2026. The closure highlights the broader industry challenge of building sustainable business models and social consensus around generative AI platforms.
