NVIDIA GTC Day 2: Open AI Model Offensive and Nemotron Coalition Launch with Mistral AI and 8 Leading Labs
On GTC Day 2, NVIDIA announced 'Nemotron Coalition' to advance open frontier model development. Initial members include Mistral AI, Perplexity, LangChain and 5 others, with 9 industry-specific models also unveiled.
On Day 2 of GTC 2026, NVIDIA announced the establishment of the 'Nemotron Coalition,' a new consortium with global AI labs to advance the development of open frontier-level foundation models. The coalition aims to accelerate open model innovation through shared expertise, data, and computational resources. Initial members include eight major AI companies including Mistral AI, Perplexity, and LangChain. As the first project, Mistral AI and NVIDIA will jointly develop a base model that will be trained on NVIDIA DGX Cloud and released as open source. This model will serve as the foundation for the future NVIDIA Nemotron 4 family. NVIDIA also unveiled a suite of open models specialized for nine industries including agentic AI, finance, and healthcare. These include 'Cosmos' for physical AI, 'Alpamayo' for autonomous vehicles, 'BioNeMo' for biology, and 'Nemotron 3' for multi-agent systems, demonstrating a commitment to dramatically expanding AI's application scope. The Nemotron Coalition announcement is a symbolic event highlighting the growing importance of open source in AI development. NVIDIA's initiative to build an open ecosystem in frontier-level AI research, where closed model development has been the mainstream, will have a significant impact on the industry. This can be seen as part of NVIDIA's strategy to evolve from a mere hardware provider into an entity that dominates the entire AI platform.
