Anthropic's AI assistant Claude has seen its paid user base double since the start of 2026, as reported by TechCrunch. The data comes from consumer transaction analytics firm Indagari, which analyzed anonymized credit card transaction data from approximately 28 million US consumers. Anthropic's spokesperson confirmed the figures.

New paid subscriptions surged to record levels between January and February 2026, with most users opting for the $20/month Pro plan. Several factors are driving this rapid growth. Most notably, Anthropic's high-profile standoff with the Department of Defense over military use of AI drew significant attention. CEO Dario Amodei issued a statement on February 26 refusing to allow the company's models to be used for lethal autonomous operations or mass surveillance of US citizens.

Additionally, new features including Claude Code for developers, the Claude Cowork productivity tool, and the recently announced Computer Use capability have contributed to user growth. While no official total user count has been released, estimates range from 18 million to 30 million users. However, OpenAI's ChatGPT remains the largest consumer AI platform.

Anthropic's success demonstrates that combining ethical values with technological innovation can challenge even dominant incumbents like OpenAI, making it a significant case study for the competitive dynamics of the AI market.
